How to update a Garmin device
Updated: 4 hours ago
Most Garmin devices can be updated through Garmin's desktop software or, on some models, directly over Wi-Fi or through the Garmin Connect app.
Option 1: Update with Garmin Express (recommended)
1. Download and install [Garmin Express] (https://www.garmin.com/en-US/software/express/) on your Windows or Mac computer.
2. Connect your Garmin device to the computer using a USB cable.
3. Open Garmin Express and select **Add a Device**.
4. Follow the prompts to register the device if needed.
5. If updates are available, choose **Install All** or select specific updates.
6. Keep the device connected until the update finishes.
Option 2: Update via Wi-Fi (supported models)
Many newer watches and GPS units can update without a computer:
1. Connect the device to a Wi-Fi network.
2. Go to **Settings** → **System** → **Software Update** (menu names vary by model).
3. Check for updates and install any available software.
Option 3: Update through Garmin Connect
For many Garmin watches:
1. Install the [Garmin Connect app] on your phone.
2. Pair the watch with the app.
3. Sync the device regularly.
4. Available updates are usually transferred automatically and installed on the watch.
If the update won't install
* Ensure the battery is at least 50% charged.
* Use the original USB cable if possible.
* Restart the device and try again.
* Make sure Garmin Express is up to date.
* Verify you have enough free storage space on the device.
